The Hu Lab at Montana State University examines how water and carbon link soil, plants and the atmosphere.
Lead by Assistant Professor Jia Hu, students and staff travel extensively to study the redwood forests of Northern California, grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau and coniferous forests across the Rocky Mountains. Their work improves understanding of plant ecophysiology in a changing climate.
The lab has developed custom equipment and techniques to address important research questions. This includes capacity to distill multiple water samples simultaneously, using automated heating in combination with liquid nitrogen, for advanced stable-isotope analyses.
Recent grant success means a new cohort of undergradu- ate and graduate students will join the lab in fall 2015. Their projects will build on a strong track record and take advantage of the lab’s significant field- and lab-based capacities.
